Public Policy: Adoption Policy

The Animal Rescue League of Boston believes that pets are family, and that everyone deserves the opportunity to have the companionship of a pet.  Our conversation-based adoption process, Adoption Forward[1], is based on trust.  We recognize that strict policies or requirements on adopters may create unnecessary barriers to placing animals into homes.

We strive to build relationships with potential adopters and create matches between pets and people that support the well-being of the entire family.  When determining the best match, ARL adoption counselors consider:

  • The basic needs of the pet based on their age and species
  • Any advanced medical or behavioral needs the pet may have
  • The safety and well-being of the pet and family
  • The priorities and expectations of the adopter

If we can’t create a match at a given time, we focus on connecting potential adopters with other options or encouraging them to check back with us in the future.  ARL supports new adopters with resources and counseling and will also receive the pet back into our care without judgment if the match isn’t successful.

ARL recognizes that prospective adopters may be bringing a pet into their lives in a variety of circumstances, including adopting pets as gifts or into settings such as schools, barns, or businesses.  We strive to approach each adoption conversation with an open mind – prioritizing the best interests of each animal in our care, while recognizing that a loving home can include many different environments and situations.
