Pediatric Spay/Neuter
The Animal Rescue League of Boston believes that spaying and neutering of pet animals before adoption eliminates the birth of unwanted animals, limits certain infections and cancers, and reduces unwanted behaviors. For these population and health reasons, the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s practice is to spay and neuter all cats, dogs and rabbits prior to adoption. One way we accomplish this is through early age spay/neuter. Early age spay/neuter is defined as spaying and neutering puppies and kittens as early as 8 weeks of age.
Some scientific studies have suggested there may be some health benefit to individual animals in delaying their spay or neuter procedure. The science on this topic is not fully developed at this time1. However, studies have been conducted that show that pediatric spay/neuter is safe and effective in both the short and long term. Owners of unaltered cats and dogs should consult with their own veterinarian to determine the optimal age for spay and neuter for their individual animal.
